Ms. S
Woodlawn, Baltimore County

2024

Ms. S, age 80, has owned her Baltimore County home for 40 years. Born in Louisiana, her family traveled a lot for her father’s career as a clergyman. This nomadic lifestyle took the family across the country before they eventually settled in Maryland, making the decision to purchase a newly built home in Baltimore County. This home would become the foundation of Ms. S's life and a place she could always return to.

After spending some time in California, Ms. S returned to Baltimore to care for her aging parents. She lived with her mother, providing devoted care until her mother's passing. Following this, Ms. S inherited the family home, where she has continued to live and make her own updates over the years. Throughout her professional career, Ms. S worked for the State of Maryland as an educator, specializing in distance and online learning. This role reflected her dedication to helping others and adapting to the evolving needs of education.

In retirement, Ms. S has faced significant challenges keeping up with the maintenance of her home and caring for her brother. Many of the home's features and appliances are as old as the house itself, requiring updates and repairs. The wear and tear of time have created several issues that need attention to ensure the house remains safe and functional for her. Ms. S found RTB through the help of her councilman recommending the BCAUSE (Baltimore County Age Friendly Upgrades for Seniors) program.

In September 2024, volunteers from F&G Annuities and Life helped us make a  transformative impact on her home. With the help of volunteers RTB was able to:

  • Replace outdated and broken appliances

  • Install accessibility modifications to ensure Ms. S can safely age in place

  • Update electrical outlets and lighting fixtures

  • Address encroaching trees and weathered boards on the rear porch

  • Addressing moisture problems in the basement

Ms. S is so grateful for these improvements to her home. These repairs have made it possible to age in place in the home she has cherished for so many years. Rebuilding Together Baltimore’s work will not only enhance her quality of life, but also ensure the home remains safe and healthy for years to come.
