Ms. A, age 75 has been in her Southwest Baltimore home for 27 years. A first generation Baltimorean whose mother came from Virginia and father from Alabama, she grew up in a large blended family. Ms. A has spent much of her life caring for the people around her. Although she never had children of her own, Ms. A has cared for aging, and sick relatives and has opened her home to family members who needed a place to stay. Her home, where she has lived for nearly three decades, has been a source of stability through her adult life. As family members grew older, Ms. A stepped into the role of caregiver, including caring for her mother and sister before they passed away in 2019 and 2023 respectively. Today, she continues to value the independence and familiarity that come with remaining in the home and community she knows.
After many years in the home, several repairs are making everyday activities more difficult. Electrical problems affect her ability to safely use appliances, forcing her to rely on extension cords in the kitchen. She is also dealing with a leaking roof, while issues in the basement make washing and drying clothes challenging. She also needs a new hot water heater and accessibility improvements that will help her move through and use her home. During RTB’s assessment, additional needs were identified that Ms. A had simply learned to live with over time. She is looking forward to having these longstanding issues addressed and making her home safer and more functional.
Rebuilding Together Baltimore with the help of Wells Fargo volunteers will complete critical repairs and accessibility modifications to help Ms. A continue living safely and independently in the home she has invested in for decades.
For Ms. A, the project is also meaningful because of the people behind the work. She shared her appreciation for those who have taken the time to visit, listen, explain the repairs, and help her navigate the process. “I love people. I love talking to people,” she said. After spending so many years caring for others, these repairs will help ensure that the home Ms. A has used to care for her family can continue to care for her too.
